The large Fancy Wing is a courting male. Though what he is hoping to draw to him are the smaller tettipods, and subsequently attracting the larger, solitary female. His “wings” release and waft an enticing pheromone, drawing the tettipods in droves. It is not uncommon for a male to be completely engulfed by them. It is a food offering of sorts to the female. If she is impressed by his offering she will feed allowing him to mate with her.
